Nose rhinoplasty: useful information and myths to dispel

Expert Aesthetic Medical Surgeon who works in Belfast, will explain what are the most recurrent doubts and myths to be dispelled during the first approaches to Rhinoplasty

Is rhinoplasty painful?

This is the question I hear most often and the answer is ABSOLUTELY NO, because both the type of intervention practiced and the post-operative anesthesia logical and pain-relieving treatment ensure an absence of pain. Unfortunately, swelling and bruising for a few days are quite frequent but rarely last longer than 7-8 days.

Do I need to wear nasal swabs after surgery?

Almost always not, rhinoplasty does not require swabs which are sometimes useful after a septoplasty (to simplify: rhinoplasty changes the shape of the nose, while septoplasty changes the internal part to allow better breathing).

It may be necessary to use tampons in the immediate postoperative period. It is therefore up to the surgeon to clarify this possibility for the patient according to what will be done.

The result of rhinoplasty is not predictable

Another false myth , born with a minimum of truth at the base. No surgeon will be able to make your nose 100% the same as a photo or drawing because post-intervention healing is an extremely variable process from person to person and minimal differences can occur, but they will only be very small details and certainly not significant from an aesthetic point of view.

Rhinoplasty leaves scars

This is also a mostly false myth. There are approaches to rhinoplasty in the nose that involve incision inside the nostrils (closed technique) in which the scars do not remain and approaches in which the incision continues on the basis of the open technique , that is, on the part of the skin between the two nostrils, but also here the residual scar is so minimal that it is often visible only with very careful inspection and enlargement. Which is the best technique depends on case by case and on the surgeon’s experience but in any case the scars will NOT be visible.

Using grafts during rhinoplasty leads to better or worse results

Doctor says that even in this case he found little information and many prejudices about it. Using grafts, that is, taking cartilage fragments to reconstruct or strengthen parts of the nose, only leads to the desired result if it is necessary to do so. "It would be like asking if using a screwdriver to open a box leads to better results, the answer is necessarily yes if the box is closed with screws." He explains. Therefore it is up to the doctor to choose which technique will be needed for your specific case and whether grafts are needed.
